The senseless murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, and the countless murders of so many Black people throughout our history demand systematic change, now. As a theatre company dedicated to young audiences, we ask ourselves, what can we do?
Our first steps are to recommit to our values, to our artists and to our community and to take a stand for justice, inclusion, opportunity and possibility.
Black Lives Matter. We stand as allies with people of color. We are committed to diversifying our theatre company on all levels, including our board, our artistic staff, directors, stage management, designers and actors to better reflect the community we serve.
At this time when social inequities are so blatant, we know we don’t have all the answers. We recognize that we are imperfect and we have much work to do. We need to stay present. We need to listen. We can no longer settle for the status quo.
As Mitch Landrieu, the former Mayor of New Orleans, wrote in the NY Times:
“We cannot continue to go over, under or around the issue of race. We have to go through it….This requires new will. We must stand arm in arm to change who we are, so that we can become what we have always promised to be: equal, free and one.”
We are committed to this change.
With love, blessings and light,
Landis, Jennifer, Leslie, Zach and the Board of Enchantment Theatre Company
